Unlawful Detainer Equal Access Project (UDEAP)

What we do

The Equal Access Project provides representation to tenants in unlawful detainer actions. Volunteering is an opportunity for attorneys and law students to obtain training and trial experience while providing a needed community service.

Ways you can help

Attorneys
  • Help on intake any day from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Take a case at inception; send discovery pro per and then sub in for trial.
  • Screen clients and give counsel and advice at a Trial Preparation Clinic.
  • Take one or two cases from the Trial Prep Clinic and try to win or settle.
  • Assist the Housing and Eviction Defense Center.

Non-Attorneys
  • Help at a Trial Prep Clinic which may include checking in clients, assisting the attorney, and interviewing clients as to the individual merits of their case.
  • Do court watch in Inglewood: check for systemic problems; how are judges applying the law to the facts; are tenants getting a chance to settle their cases?
  • Do court watch in the downtown Los Angeles court.
  • Pick a geographic area with 4-10 buildings and go door-to-door in groups of two, handing out information and finding out about problems. Spanish or Korean speaking preferred.
  • Follow up on cases to see what happened to tenants who came to our Trial Prep Clinics. Did they win, lose, or settle their cases?
  • Assist the Housing and Eviction Defense Center.
