Housing and Eviction Defense

What we do

The Housing Unit runs the Eviction Defense Center: a high-volume clinic which helps clients prepare answers to unlawful detainers and provides some representation in unlawful detainer cases. We also handle cases involving Section 8 housing, habitability issues, rent control, and 30-day notices.

Ways you can help

Attorneys
  • Co-counsel with LAFLA attorneys in litigating slum abatement cases.
  • Work in the evening landlord-tenant clinics in the Santa Monica office. Volunteers give advice and occasionally answer unlawful detainers.
  • Assist the Unlawful Detainer Equal Access Project
Non-Attorneys
  • Help elderly, disabled, or single parent tenants move.
  • Participate in "know your rights" presentations. Volunteer teams visit agencies or tenant groups and provide education on landlord/tenant law, fair housing laws, and ways to access housing services.
  • Participate in weekend "habitability assistance" projects. Volunteer teams, usually on a Saturday or Sunday, visit several apartment buildings to distribute information to tenants, talk with them about how to get repairs done, inspect the building for possible referral to Code Enforcement, and perhaps take photos of the conditions of the building.
  • Work at the LAFLA Housing and Eviction Defense Center on a regular basis. Regular volunteers help interview clients and prepare eviction answers. If interested, volunteers can receive training on the eviction trial process, discovery, negotiations, preparing documents and defendants for trial, etc.
  • Assist the Unlawful Detainer Equal Access Project
