Housing Unit

LAFLA West Office, 1102 Crenshaw Blvd.
Central Office, 1555 W. 8th Street

Low vacancy rates and rapidly rising rents, combined with a large stock of old apartment buildings, result in an increase of substandard (or slum) housing in Los Angeles. The Housing Unit fights to improve habitability conditions through major litigation and community education and outreach.

Pro bono attorneys co-counsel with LAFLA staff attorneys on major litigation against slumlords. Volunteer attorneys and law students also work in our offices on the full range of civil litigation, from fact gathering and discovery to pleadings and trial preparation. Bilingual Spanish speaking community volunteers may help with outreach to inform community residents about unsafe housing conditions.
