GR Advocacy

East Los Angeles Office, 5228 Whittier Blvd.
and DPSS Offices

General Relief is the government benefit of last resort for the homeless and desperately needy. Providing recipients $221 per month and Food Stamps, it can often mean the difference between a bed in a Single Room Occupancy hotel in skid row, or sleeping on the streets.

Establishing and marinating eligibility for GR is often difficult, and LAFLA’s Government Benefit Unit assists clients by phone and in person at local welfare offices. Volunteer law students and community advocates develop their legal reasoning skills as they help clients maneuver through a confusing array of laws and regulation. Often those who can’t reach an advocate will be unable to get their benefits, ending up without shelter or food. Advocates, especially bilingual Spanish-speakers, are always needed.
