More than 80,000 evictions are filed in Los Angeles County each year, the vast majority in the area served by LAFLA. While LAFLA retains a number of cases for full representation, many other tenants will have to represent themselves at trial.

After a 1997 study which showed that less than 1% of self-represented tenants won their eviction cases against represented landlords. The following year LAFLA began its Trial Prep Clinics, helping tenants prepare their arguments and counseling them on what evidence to introduce and how to conduct themselves in trial. Current statistics show that 35% of those who attend the Trial Prep Clinics win their cases against represented attorneys.

Attorneys and law students volunteer in both Los Angeles and Long Beach to assist with clinics. Clinics are currently scheduled on Wednesdays in Long Beach and Wednesdays and Thursday mornings in Los Angeles.
