Approximately 47 percent of LAFLAís annual operating budget comes from the Legal Services Corporation, a nonprofit corporation established by Congress to administer a nationwide legal assistance program.
LAFLA receives additional funding from the State Bar of Californiaís Legal Services Trust Fund Program, the State of California Equal Access Fund, the City and County of Los Angeles, the City of Santa Monica, and a variety of federal, state and local grants.
An annual grant from the United Way of Greater Los Angeles accounts for less than one percent of our operating budget.
Voluntary contributions from law firms and individual attorneys, corporations, foundations, and the general public provide substantial revenue to augment these other sources of funding.
In 2003 alone, LAFLA raised in excess of $1.3 million through our various fundraising efforts:
- The Annual Fund Drive Law Firm Campaign, targeted at law firms in our service area, brought in over $567,760 from 78 law firms.
- The fifth annual Access to Justice Dinner drew over 550 guests and raised $443,703.
- The ninth annual Long Beach Grand Cru international wine competition and gala public tasting attracted over 1,400 wine entries, was attended by more than 1,400 guests and raised $215,286 to support services to the Long Beach community.
- 230 junior lawyers from 10 law firms contributed $20,305 and volunteered pro bono hours through the Associates Campaign for Legal Aid.
- Individual donations and United Way donor-designated gifts to the Annual Fund Drive raised over $149,456.
