Medi-Cal

What is it?
Medical is California’s program to pay for medical care for low-income people.

Who can qualify?
You are a California resident. You get SSI, CalWORKs, Foster Care, Refugee Cash Assistance. The following groups get Medi-Cal

  • Pregnant women
  • Children under age 21
  • Adults 65 and older
  • People of any age who are blind or disabled by Social Security standards
  • Caretaker relative of minor child under 21
  • Refugees
  • People living in long term care facility
  • People infected with tuberculosis
  • Women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer
  • You meet the income limits (depends on how many people in your household and under which category you are eligible)
  • You meet the resource limits (depends on how many people in your household)

How to apply

  • Call (877) 597-4777 to get an application mailed to you
  • Go to a DPSS office
  • Some hospitals and clinics also provide applications

Your rights when you apply

  • You have the right to apply
  • The County must notify you within 45 days of the application if you have been approved or denied
