In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)
What is it?
The In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) Program helps pay for services provided to persons who are 65 years or older, blind, or disabled, so they can remain safely in their own homes. If you are eligible for IHSS, you can choose someone to be your provider to help you with your daily needs. Your provider will be paid through this program.
Who can qualify?
- You must be 65 years or older, OR legally blind, any age, OR disabled by Social Security standards, any age
- You must be a California resident
- You must live in your own home (except a nursing home or other out-of-home care facility
- You receive or are eligible to receive SSI, OR you meet all SSI requirements except income and immigration status
- Your resources (property) does not exceed $2,000, or $3,000 for a couple
What do you get?
Your provider can give you the following services:
- Household chores: housecleaning, changing bed linen, laundry, meal preparation, meal
- Clean-up, food shopping, errands
- Personal Care Services: non-medical assistance with respiration, bowel and bladder care,
- Feeding, bathing, grooming, dressing, assistance with ambulation, help in and out of bed,
- Assistance with medications and prosthesis care
- Accompaniment to medical appointments
- Protective Supervision
- Paramedical services

- If you receive SSI, a county social worker will interview you at your home.
- If you do not receive SSI, you must first be determined eligible for
Medi-Cal.
