Foster Care
What is it?
Foster care benefits are cash aid benefits for the child only and include Medi-Cal for the child.
Who can Qualify?
- If you are caring for a child in your home who is NOT related to you, and was placed with you by DCFS (Department of Children and Family Services) or by a licensed Foster Family Agency, AND
- You are either the child’s legal guardian or your home is a state licensed foster care home
- If you are caring for a related child, you may be eligible for Foster Care as a YOUAKIM case. You are eligible if:
- The child was removed from the parents and placed with you by an order of Dependency Court
- DCFS is responsible for the child’s placement and care
- The child received or was eligible to receive CalWORKs in the month DCFS asked the court to remove the child from the parents or within six months prior to that

- Foster Care benefits for unrelated legal guardian
- Kin-Gap for relative who is not a legal guardian
- Adoption Assistance to help families adopt children
