Human Trafficking : General Information

TVPA defines ‘severe forms of trafficking’ as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for:

commercial sex
induced by force, fraud, or coercion OR
in which the person is induced to perform such act has not yet reached 18 years of age
OR
labor or services
through the use of force, fraud, or coercion AND
for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery.

The TVPA seeks to:

Protect victims and provide them with necessary benefits once they have escaped traffickers.
Prosecute traffickers by imposing criminal penalties.
Prevent trafficking by committing US resources to international anti-trafficking efforts.
