The challenges facing the growing population of the working poor are complex. Marginal businesses in low-wage industries employ many of the working poor. Most low-wage workers have few other employment options. Enforcement of basic workplace protections is difficult, and too often rare, in these industries.
To be able to escape from the trap of poverty wage jobs and achieve self-sufficiency, the working poor often need additional income and family support. Whether it comes in the form of an earned income tax credit, government support for childcare, or job training and education, there remains a vital need for targeted government support for the poor. But these critical support services are severely lacking. And navigating the bureaucracy can be a major barrier for the working poor, effectively denying them vital support services.
For many, higher education remains the best hope for getting out of poverty, but the barriers to education, in particular financing, remain significant for most.
LAFLA helps working people address their employment problems in a variety of ways:
| Educating and representing low-wage workers in pay disputes over wage claims for minimum wage, overtime and vacation pay, and unemployment benefit insurance denials | |
| Advocating for greater education and training to move into stable, living wage jobs with the opportunity for workplace advancement | |
| Helping former welfare recipients who are working get better, more effective responses from their welfare case workers to their unmet work related needs | |
| Informing workers of their rights when they are unfairly targeted for retaliation or suffer workplace discrimination |
