Learning Your Rights
Korean client gains custody of her children.

A monolingual Korean speaking mother of two children, Ms. P, fled her home after many years of physical abuse. Like many Korean women, she thought that the legal system favored men because Korean law usually awards custody to fathers.

Unaware of her legal rights, she was so distraught and unstable that she sadly left her children in the home with the abuser. After three months, Ms. P missed her children terribly and called the API Unit Korean language line for assistance.

API Unit attorneys prepared paperwork for her and represented Ms. P at an emergency hearing so that she could see her children. The API Unit also began divorce proceedings on Ms. P's behalf and represented her at another hearing for custody and support.

Ms. P now has primary custody of her children with limited visitation to their father and a child support order.
