Position: AmeriCorps Attorney

LAFLA is largest public interest firm in California and operates 6 neighborhood offices and 5 court based self help centers throughout Los Angeles. As Los Angeles’ frontline law firm for low-income people, we promote access to justice, strengthen communities, combat discrimination, and effect systemic change through representation, advocacy, and community education.

The Employment Law Unit at LAFLA advocates on behalf of low-wage workers who labor in a wide range of industries such as restaurant, garment, janitorial, and car wash. Through community education, direct services, advocacy, litigation, and community collaborations, the unit seeks to educate and empower low-wage workers to uphold their basic employment rights.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
The member will recruit, train, and manage law student volunteers, who will conduct legal education trainings on employment law and workers' rights for low-income workers in the Los Angeles area. The member will oversee and also help staff Employment Law clinics and provide direct legal assistance to clients in the area of workers' rights.

QUALIFICATIONS
Attorney candidates must be licensed in California, waiting for bar results, or intending to take the next bar exam. Candidates should also:

  • Possess strong written and oral advocacy skills
  • Demonstrate a commitment to providing high-quality legal assistance to low-income clients
  • Have the ability to motivate and manage law students
  • Be able to speak Spanish, Korean, Cantonese, or another Asian language (highly desirable)
  • Be available to start by August 1, 2008

BENEFITS

  • A $22,800 living allowance
  • Health insurance and eligibility for child care assistance (if income eligible)
  • $4,725 for educational loan repayment or expenses
  • $150 per month for educational loan repayment (must be employed for 12 months)
  • Up to $ 500.00 per month for housing allowance
