Program Description
The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is largest law
firm for low-income people in California and is currently accepting
applications for the positions of an Administrative/Legal Secretary
for our various offices.
The Organization: LAFLA (www.LAFLA.org) consists of approximately 150 employees, and over 60 attorneys. The program has an annual operating budget of more than fourteen million dollars, and operates six neighborhood offices and four court-based offices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- At least three (3) years responsible legal secretarial experience
- Type 60 w.p.m., with excellent proofing skills, as well as being able to transcribe from dictating equipment
- Demonstrated proficiency with computerized office applications (word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and network software)
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Ability to work collaboratively with all LAFLA staff, clients, vendors and community organizations
- Travel to all LAFLA locations
- Bilingual, written and oral skills
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Takes and transcribes a variety of legal correspondence, petitions, briefs and legislative matters, pleadings, motions and interrogatories;
- Types and reviews outgoing correspondence to insure all legal documents and enclosures are in proper processing order and that correspondence is grammatically correct;
- Types correspondence for signature of attorney, checking accuracy of legal citations and quotes, etc., as well as independently composing general correspondence;
- Provides administrative duties as assigned by the office managers;
- Prepares drafts of routine interrogatories and pleadings, selecting appropriate data from the files, discusses specific problems that require individualized drafting with the attorney; and prepares final drafts for attorney review;
- Performs a variety of responsible secretarial duties such as setting up and/or maintaining filing systems and appointment calendars, answering inquiries over the phone or in person, and managing secretarial and administrative details with minimum direction;
- Provides administrative, reception & legal secretary support for all offices on a as needed basis;
- Provides support in short term legal projects, including, but not limited to trial preparation tasks;
- Participates in community outreach projects;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
