Program Description
The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is the oldest
and largest law firm for low-income people in California and is
currently accepting applications of Paralegal for our
West Community office.
The Organization: LAFLA (www.LAFLA.org) consists of approximately 150 employees, and over 60 attorneys. The program has an annual operating budget of more than fourteen million dollars, and operates six neighborhood offices and four court-based offices.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in providing assistance to the poverty population
- Knowledge of immigration law and experience in doing outreach to community based organizations or with immigrant groups
- Ability to deal with people tactfully and effectively
- Demonstrated commitment to serving immigrant communities
- Bilingual in some other language, such as Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Vietnamese, Khmer, Russian or Spanish preferred.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Interview torture victims and work under supervision of attorney to provide direct legal services (government benefits, family reunification, adjustment of status, naturalization, political asylum) to clients
- Preliminarily identify issues and conduct research on human rights practices for asylum cases
- Conduct outreach to community-based organizations, community groups and coordinate outreach efforts to underserved communities including the African, Iranian, Mexican and the Central and So. American communities on the West side and the San Fernando Valley
- Coordinate with other assistance organizations in the area by providing referrals and implementing partner meetings to assure appropriate and efficient coverage of services
- Attend monthly meetings with the West Clients Council and coordinate events in the community to disseminate information about rights and benefits available to victims of torture
- Post and update information regarding services on LAFLA’s website.
