Program Description
The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is the oldest
and largest law firm for low-income people in California and is
currently accepting applications for the position of Staff
Attorney.
The Organization: LAFLA (www.LAFLA.org) consists of approximately 150 employees, and over 60 attorneys. The program has an annual operating budget of more than fourteen million dollars, and operates six neighborhood offices and four court-based offices.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Active membership in the California State Bar
- Demonstrated experience and competence in civil litigation and other lawyering skills, including client interviewing and case evaluation, legal research and writing, discovery, negotiations, and trial and appellate practice
- Knowledge of the poverty community and the issues affecting that community
- Knowledge of public assistance/government benefits programs and health programs desirable
- Working knowledge of federal, state and county welfare programs
- Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of public benefits recipients
- Previous experience in a legal services program preferred.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assume responsibility for major welfare litigation caseload including complex cases with emphasis on legal matters affecting public benefits programs
- Participate in and support LAFLA and other legal services task forces involved in issues affecting the public assistance population
- Assist in program-wide assessment of needs regarding public benefits, and coordinate program-wide strategies in response to identified needs
- Assist in the development and implementation of creative, alternate legal strategies on behalf of welfare clients
- Regularly assist with client emergency intake
- Participate in community education activities.
