| q. | How is LAFLA funded? |
| a. | LAFLA is funded through grants from the Legal Services Corporation, California State Bar, United Way, and the Cities of Los Angeles and Santa Monica. We also receive generous support from private law firms, corporations, foundations, and the general public. For more information, please see our funding section. |

Client Services
| q. | Who is eligible for LAFLA's client services? |
| a. | LAFLA is only permitted to help people whose incomes are below a level fixed by the federal government and who live in our service area. |
| q. | What kind of eligibility information will I be asked if I apply for services? |
| a. | You will be asked about your income, the property you own, your zip code, family size, age, race, and citizenship or immigrations status. |
| q. | Will my information be kept confidential? |
| a. | Yes. All information you give us is confidential and will not be given to anyone without your permission. |
| q. | Does LAFLA have interpreters for non-English speaking clients? |
| a. | Yes. All of our offices have LAFLA advocates who speak Spanish. We also provide interpretation of several Asian languages through our Asian/ Pacific Islander Unit. |
| q. | How can I apply for services? |

| q. | What kind of cases does LAFLA handle? |

| Community Economic Development: We help community groups incorporate and maintain nonprofit status, develop business ventures, multi-family residential and commercial developments, and create homeownership opportunities. | |
| Consumer Law: We handle cases involving consumer fraud, including vocational school fraud, contracts and warranties, loan and installment purchase agreements, unfair sales practices, discriminatory banking practices, debt collection harassment, repossessions, and wage garnishment. | |
| Employment Law: We handle primarily wage claims and unemployment benefit insurance denials. We help some workers who have been unlawfully terminated. | |
| Family Law: We provide advice concerning child custody and visitation, child support, and domestic violence. All family law intake is done through two walk-in clinics: Maynard Toll Counseling Center, located in the downtown Superior Courthouse and the Domestic Violence Project in the Santa Monica Courthouse, and an appointment-only clinic for Santa Monica Residents. | |
| Government Benefits: We help with problems involving Cal WORKs, Social Security Supplemental Income (SSI), Medi-Cal, Medicare, Food Stamps, IHSS, welfare, healthcare, and General Relief. | |
| Homeownership: We help with foreclosures, problems with home improvement loans, home equity loans, bail bond liens, mechanics liens or other types of loans against your home, faulty home improvement work performed, and legal problems related to a transaction involving your home. | |
| Housing: The Housing/Eviction Defense Center prepares responses to unlawful detainers and represents some clients in court. We also file lawsuits to get buildings repaired and handle cases involving rent control, unsafe buildings, utility shut-offs, and subsidized or public housing problems. We offer 3/30 day notice and pre-trial clinics. | |
| Immigration Law: We represent some individuals in deportation proceedings when legal defenses are available, helps immigrants who are victims of domestic violence to become lawful permanent residents, and hold naturalization workshops. | |
| Victims of Violent Crime: We help residents in the City of LA file claims with the Victims of Violent Crime fund. | |
| q. | What cases do you not handle? |
| a. | LAFLA cannot take criminal or fee-generating cases. In addition, there are restrictions on representing prisoners, abortion cases, selective service, and others. |

| a. | Yes. LAFLA offers volunteer and externship opportunites for law students throughout the year. In addition, we run a ten-week full-time program each summer for law clerks. Summer Law Clerkships. |
